The mattress that’s best for you depends upon your specific needs.

For back pain or discomfort I think both Select Comfort (pillow top version) and Tempurpedic (Rhapsody) work well. Each has unique ways of individualizing the mattress for the sleeper.

With the Select Comfort (a.k.a. “The Sleep Number Bed”) you get to choose your own firmness. If you go to their website they will help you pick your “Sleep Number” based on data they have on thousands of customers.

Tempurpedic is actually recommended by chiropractors, and is the only mattress I have seen that has the approval of healthcare workers.

For general use, among higher-end mattresses, I like Kingsdown - this is the mattress I sleep on. It runs around $2500, but it’s well worth it.

Among mid-range mattresses, Simmons (Beauty Rest) has great value and comfort - these are what I have my kids on.
